Undergraduate Application Requirements

Requirements for Application

For admission to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as a transfer student from another university, see Transferring from Out-of-State Institutions.

For admission to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as a current CU-Boulder student:

  1. A minimum of 30 semester hours, completed or in progress including at least 12 hours completed at CU.
  2. Progress toward completion of arts & sciences core and completion or enrollment in WRTG 1150 or 1250.
  3. JOUR 1001 Contemporary Mass Media and JOUR 2601 Principles of Journalism or JOUR 2403 Principles of Advertising completed or in progress at time of application. Broadcast News, Broadcast Production and News-Editorial applicants must enroll in JOUR 2601. Advertising applicants must enroll in JOUR 2403. Media Studies applicants must enroll in 2601 or 2403.
  4. An overall grade point average of at least 2.25 in completed course work and an average of at least 2.50 in JOUR courses (completed and/or in progress).

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

When to Apply
Spring Semester: No later than February 20 for admission to the following fall semester.
Fall Semester: No later than October 1 for admission to the following spring semester.

Application Materials

  1. College/School Change Form (also known as an Intra-University Transfer or IUT): This form is available in the SJMC Office. In the space asking for "Primary Major 1," designate one of these sequences:
    • Advertising (ADVT)
    • Broadcast News (BCNS)
    • Broadcast Production (BCPM)
    • Media Studies (MDST)
    • News-Editorial (NSED)
    If you are seeking a double degree with another college or school, please indicate your non-SJMC degree at the top of the form. Remember, double degrees generally require 150 credit hours for completion. If you are planning to go on the Time-Out Program, please write "TOP" at the top of the IUT Form, along with the semester and year you will be returning.

  2. Essay requirement: Essay guidelines specific to each sequence are available in Armory 116.

  3. Student profile sheet: Available in Armory 116.

  4. A list of any JOUR courses with course and section numbers you are currently taking. List any courses you are currently taking in Continuing Education, Correspondence or the Boulder Evening program.

Transcripts and dean's pages will be ordered by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
