SJMC GRANT FUNDS INTERACTIVE 'CITIZEN JOURNALISM'
The SJMC has received an $110,000 grant from the McCormick Foundation of Chicago to explore interactive, multimedia "citizen journalism." The Web-based "Resolving Door" project will invite reader-participants to describe local problems, which other reader-participants will be encouraged to research and help solve.” We hope to develop a learning environment that trains a new kind of journalist/editor, one who works primarily with 'untrained' journalists," said Dean Paul Voakes. "The platform will serve as a laboratory for the editing skills that will be essential in community journalism of the future." Student journalists working on the project will create a series of online tutorials by which novice citizen-journalists can learn how to upload information using a number of different media.

SJMC RECEIVES HUGE SCHOLARSHIP CHECK
The SJMC received a check this week for $778,778 from the estate of William S. Hemingway, a former copy editor at The Denver Post. The money is designated for student scholarships. Dean Paul S. Voakes said the gift was a complete surprise and its impact on the School will be immediate. "Mr. Hemingway's gift enables our School to become accessible to a number of highly qualified students who may have thought CU was beyond their reach financially," he said. Hemingway worked at The Denver Post from 1960 to his retirement at 1991. He was assistant editor of Empire Magazine, zone editor, photo editor, assistant make-up editor and an assistant city editor, according to a funeral noticed that ran in the Post in April.
