Scholarship ApplicationMust be a student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and have completed a minimum of 30 hours. Students graduating in December 2009 are not eligible. Three essays and an application form are required. Financial Aid Essay [100 words] The SJMC offers some scholarships based on financial need. Please list financial resources you have secured for Fall 2009. These include scholarships, financial aid packets, employment and family assistance. Journalism Essay [750 words] Describe your interest in print, broadcasting, advertising or media studies. Master's students describe your interest in Newsgathering or Research. Discuss your career goals. List your accomplishments and describe any related experience you have, including high school activities, internships or paid positions. Personal Bio in Third Person [100 words] What would you like the scholarship committee to know about you? Pick up the application form from Dave Martinez in Armory 1B28. Return the application and essays to him by 5 p.m., Monday, Feb.16. All scholarship awardees will be asked to attend the scholarship banquet to thank their donors for their generosity. A thank you letter must be mailed to the donor no later than May 1. A copy of the letter must be sent to Dave Martinez at David.Martinez@Colorado.edu. Should you choose to write a thank you card, a copy of the inside of the card must be provided to Dave Martinez in Armory 1B28. Please note that some donors may require copies of your work such as writing samples. Some donors may require that you have taken certain courses. Donors may also require an interview. Our scholarship coordinator will contact you ahead of time if this is the case. These interviews may interfere with one of your courses, and you will be asked to inform your professors ahead of time. In a 1-2-page essay, please suggest a way in which media – in journalism, advertising or public relations – can enhance cultural awareness or community progress, or reach out to underserved markets. Describe an event in your life that raised your own awareness of this dimension of media work, and tell us what you personally would like to accomplish in this area, in your own media career. The Scholarship Committee will choose Hemingway Scholars using the following equally weighted criteria:
Students who meet two or more of these criteria are encouraged to apply for the Hemingway Scholarships. Seven students will receive $10,000 each; these students will be named Hemingway Scholars. Community college students who are transferring as juniors are also encouraged to apply.
