News-Ed Apps Still Strong
Last week the School took in 214 applications for spring 2010, once again an increase over the number received a year ago. The largest gain was in the News-Editorial sequence, which saw a 27 percent increase in applications despite the accelerating collapse of the newspaper and magazine industries.

"I think our students are looking at professional media and seeing an intriguing array of opportunities, many of which have little to do with print news media, which are certainly struggling to find a new business model," Dean Paul Voakes said. "But the capabilities of digital technology, mixed with great visual, writing and information-gathering skills, suggest a promising future for young professional communicators."

The Advertising sequence continues to attract the highest number of applicants with 107 applying for spring 2010. The SJMC acceptance rate is about 53 percent.

She Ain't No Couch Potato!
Darcy Couch. Photo by Angela Boatwright for ESPN The Magazine.ESPN The Magazine profiled several people with jobs in sports, including Darcy Couch ('00). Couch is in her fifth year with the University of Southern California's athletic department. As Assistant Sports Information Director, she spends a lot of her time promoting athletes and teams like men's tennis and women's water polo that don't get much recognition from the media. She was voted Staff Member of the Year by the student-athletes and athletic department staff. "I still miss Boulder," she says, "but I'm one of the extremely fortunate people who can say they truly love their job!"

Rick Reilly after licking Colorado's capitol dome.Capitol Dome Comes Clean
ESPN columnist Rick Reilly ('81) kept his word and "washed" the Capitol Dome -- with his tongue. Early in the Colorado Rockies season, Reilly commented that if the Rockies made the playoffs, he would wash the Capitol Dome with his tongue. When the Rockies clinched the National League wildcard by beating the Milwaukee Brewers, Reilly stepped up to the plate, armed with mouthwash.

A Girl and Her Guitar
Katie HerzigKatie Herzig ('00) is putting her degree in Broadcast Production to work as an independent singer/songwriter in Nashville. Not only does she write, sing and play most of the instruments in the songs on her solo albums, she also produces them.

Herzig comes from a musical family, but she got her start as a sophomore, jamming with other students in the CU dorms. She formed a band with some of those other students, but decided to step out on her own when the band broke up in 2006. Since then, her work has been featured in commercials and on the TV show "Grey's Anatomy." Listen to this golden throat online, then catch her on tour this fall.

Emmy Award
Advisory Board member and SJMC alum Tom Costello ('87) played a major role in reporting "Bailout Talks Collapse," a story that was awarded a national Emmy in September for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast. The piece ran on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. Costello has been a correspondent in NBC's Washington bureau since 2005.

Fashionable StartKatie Corcoran and Annie Walsh. Photo by Marty Caivano.
Marty Caivano ('94) caught up with two senior SJMC fashionistas to photograph them for a recent Colorado Daily article. Katie Corcoran and Annie Walsh are blogging for the recently launched CollegeFashionista.com. The budding fashion journalists will write about what's hot on the CU campus and how students can be stylish without going broke.
Voices from the Podium
Lisa WilliamsLisa Williams, founder and CEO of Placeblogger.com, the largest searchable directory of local weblogs and winner of a Knight 21st Century News Challenge Award, talked to master's students in September.  Online news sources are gaining credibility, she said.

"Every day (postings) look more like a wire service albeit with many, many more cat pictures. I like to think of it as the 'Extremely Not Ready for Prime Time' Associated Press."

Williams finds many mid-career journalists "heartbreakingly loyal" to their institutions. In the new order, she said, "company loyalty is obsolete." It's been replaced by loyalty to ideas, ideals and friends who may be your boss one day and your employee on another day.

"The difference between mainstream journalism and entrepreneurial journalism is the attitude. 'Stay Calm and Carry On' is now being replaced by 'Get Excited and Make Things.'"

Weighing in on Winfrey
The opening week of the 24th season of Oprah Winfrey's afternoon talk show has landed Associate Professor Janice Peck in the spotlight. Associated Press TV writer, Dave Bauder, quoted Peck extensively in his story about Oprah's season opener, and the story showed up (online or in print) in the New York Times, CBS, MSNBC, The Denver Post, The Chicago Tribune, Yahoo News, Salon.com, and The Huffington Post. Peck is the author of "The Age of Oprah," in which she examines how Oprah has evolved from a talk show host into a cultural icon and leader.
