The Campus Press takes a leap this week, becoming CU Independent. The student publication will no longer be part of the SJMC curriculum as of January. This summer the student editors and advisor Amy Herdy worked with sales consultant Jim Birschbach and SJMC accountant Catherine Larkins to develop a business plan.
To help introduce the new online publication, CU Independent has produced a full-color, 32-page glossy magazine entitled "CU Survival Guide." 12,000 copies will be distributed to dorm rooms and high-traffic places on campus.

Calling you "Home!"
Alums, we've got an extraordinary Homecoming event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4. One of our new faculty members is Jim Sheeler, whose series "Final Salute" took the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing. He'll be giving a multimedia presentation of this highly moving series (now a book), accompanied by U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Steve Beck, the principal character in Sheeler's narrative.
As a bonus, we'll host the event in the campus's new ATLAS building, so you'll be able to tour the state-of-the-art broadcast studio and performance areas of the building.
The TV gods have not determined the hour of the Homecoming Game kickoff (vs. U. of Texas!), so for now we'll just say that our event will begin exactly three hours before kickoff.
Hope to see you there!

Documenting Democracy
More than 55 SJMC students will get national news experience as interns and volunteers with local and national news outlets during the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Denver Aug. 25-28.
Internship Director Alan Kirkpatrick said ABC News, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, BBC, and several other national news outlets contacted the school about student interns. Master's student Maria Genao-Homs, pictured above, is interning for ABC during the Democratic National Convention. The experience will be a fine end to her summer internship with ABC-affiliate KMGH Channel 7.

Broadening Horizons in Chicago
Ten students and recent graduates represented the SJMC at the UNITY: Journalists of Color convention in Chicago in late July. Most of the students and graduates took advantage of the opportunity to network with alumni like Jeanette Chavez ('73), managing editor of The Denver Post, and Andy Vuong ('00) energy reporter for the Post. The students also helped Dave Martinez run CU's booth promoting the school's graduate programs, the Ted Scripps Fellowships and two faculty openings.
The SJMC also held an alumni reception at the South Water Kitchen in Chicago on July 22. More than 35 SJMC alumni and friends attended, including Sarah Miller ('98), left, producer at Towers Productions documentary company, and Lynette Romero ('89), right, reporter and anchor for KTLA/WB in Los Angeles. Attendees reminisced about CU and got the scoop on the J-school.
