Eve O'brien Byron with Mike Wallace

Eve O'Brien Byron ('87) is spending the academic year at the University of Michigan enjoying a "customized sabbatical" on the 1998 $35,000 Mike Wallace Fellowship in Investigative Journalism sponsored by the university's Journalism Fellows Program.

Byron, a reporter for the Independent Record in Helena, Mont., for five years, joins 11 other journalists in the program for outstanding mid-career professionals.

Byron covered the city, Lewis and Clark County and the outdoors. She went to Montana after working for newspapers in Colorado, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Byron is studying at Michigan through April and plans to return to the newspaper when she's finished. Her areas of study include the use of narrative storytelling in investigative reporting, ethics in the newsroom and the Internet. Byron met Wallace at a luncheon in New York in June.
