CU-Boulder Listproc List Application - Mailhome

ListProc and CU's mailhome program ...and how it affects your email rewrite

What Is My "Email Rewrite"?

At CU-Boulder, we allow all users to change some aspects of their email accounts. One of these options is to change the From: header field of outgoing mail:

From: Joe.User@Colorado.EDU
To: My-Friend@somewhere.com
Subject: RE: Your memo

Typically, a person has three choices, although there may be more. For this example, we will be using a person named Joe User who has a login for their account of userj:

  1. Joe.User@Colorado.EDU
  2. userj@Colorado.EDU
  3. userj@host.colorado.edu

So, when someone receives your mail it will appear to come from one of the above addresses, and will be the address used in response email. This is called your email rewrite. To change it, use the following command from your Unix account (this example is for the host called spot):

spot> mailhome

Why Does This Matter?

Because this email rewrite is who ListProc thinks you are. If you create a list with one address and then change it later, or create a list with an address that's inconsistant with your current email rewrite settings, ListProc won't know who you are! The same type of problem can happen with your personal mail program (e.g. Eudora).

If you decide to change your settings, you should look at the ListProc help files to find out how to change the owner address.
