command. This should explain what
the list is about and perhaps policies of the list.
Please Note:
Users will not get this information when they subscribe to the list. This
information will only be given when the info command is used.
Long text description:
Lastly, we need any special instructions or list features that you would like
initially incorporated into your list. Because there are so many list options,
only the most common will be outlined below. When requesting initial features,
please use the terminology below for clarity. You may request only one feature
within each group of features defined below. You may change your list features
yourself at any point after the list has been created. In the descriptions
below, you may only check one feature per section.
Default List Values
The default values for lists are pre-checked in the sections below.
How Messages are Distributed to the List
unmoderated - Messages sent to the list are distributed automatically.
moderated-edit - Any message sent to the list by other than the list owners
will be forwarded to the list owners for approval. The list owners can then
edit the message and forward it back to the list or simply forward it along
without any editing.
moderated-no-edit - Any message sent to the list by other than the list owners
will be forwarded to the list owners for approval. The list owners can then
approve the message by using the message tag contained within the message.
How Subscription Requests are Handled for the List
open-subscriptions - Subscription requests for the list are automatic.
owner-subscriptions - Subscription requests for the list are forwarded to the
list owners for approval.
Does the List Show Up in the Lists Command?
visible-list - List and its short description show up when a user issues the
lists command.
hidden-list - List and its short description do not show up when a user issues
the lists command and other commands are limited to only list subscribers.
Who Can Send to the List?
send-by-subscribers - Only subscribers and owners of the list may send to the
list.
send-by-owners - Only list owners may send to the list.
Where do Replies to List Messages Go?
With all of the reply features, only the Reply-To: mail header is affected.
If a list user's mail program doesn't understand or use the Reply-To: mail
header, reply features cannot be guaranteed.
reply-to-sender - Replies to list messages will go back to the original
sender.
reply-to-list - Replies to list messages will go back to everyone on the list.
ITS recommends against using this feature as it may create mail loops.
reply-to-omit - Reply-to: header line is omitted from messages from the
list. Replies will depend on the mail program being used. Usually the list
owner will receive replies if this option is set.
Does the List Distribute Digests and How Often?
A list digest is a compilation of messages sent to a list during a specific
time period that is then distributed to those users who have set their mail
mode to digest.
no-digests - All list traffic will be distributed as individual messages.
digest daily hh:mm - Digests are distributed daily at hh:mm, e.g. digest daily
12:00 would mean that a digest would be sent out every day at noon if messages
had been sent to the list during the previous day. Enter time in 24 hour Format.

digest weekly day-of-week - Digests are distributed weekly on day-of-week day,
e.g. digest weekly wednesday would mean that a digest would be sent out once a
week on Wednesday if messages had been sent to the list during the previous
week. A digest weekly list must be given a day of the week to send out digests.
If you choose this digest option, you must also choose a day of the week.

ITS recommends that you set your list to no-digest initially and then change
it if your subscribers request it.
Initial List of Subscribers
If you would like to provide an initial list of subscribers, include them below
in the format:
subscriber-address First-Name Last-Name
one per line, e.g.:
buffalor@colorado.edu Ralphie Buffalo
Chip.Buffalo@colorado.edu Chip Buffalo
Make sure that you enter them one per line with a carriage return after
each line.
Because it is very difficult to know the address that the list processor will
need to use to verify an address for restricted lists, ITS recommends that
you do not provide an initial list and instead let list subscribers subscribe
themselves to lists.
Please Note:
It is not recommended that you add users in this manner due to
email conventions at the University of Colorado. You should have them
subscribe to the list individually (a process described when you get
your confirmation email).
One problem a lot of people experience when placing addresses in this field is
they tend to copy and paste those addresses. That will also copy
hidden carriage returns onto the line following the last address. Before submitting, place
the cursor on the line following the last address and hit delete a couple of times to remove
those hidden carriage returns. If you submit the application and you get an error which states
invalid initial subscribers field but it doesn't specifically list any addresses, that is the
problem.
Initial Subscribers:
You will be contacted via e-mail when your list has been created. This
contact message will include instructions for use and management of your
lists.
