Windows 2000 on the UCB Campus

Microsoft Windows 2000 was released on February 17, 2000. This latest Windows operating system, based on NT 4, includes many new features and technologies that will potentially benefit users on the Boulder campus. Along with the increased functionality comes an increase in complexity. Windows 2000 must be integrated into the existing IT infrastructure to manage and support its method of directory service, security and authentication, and resource sharing.

Information Technology Services' goal is to gain an in-depth understanding of the Windows 2000 technologies and design a framework for its deployment. This will include the design, implementation and management of the Active Directory and the Kerberos 5 realm, and modifying the existing Domain Naming System (DNS) to handle the specific requirements of Windows 2000. In addition, we will publish technical information regarding the deployment process, planning aids, migration strategies, best practices and other operational guidelines. ITS will maintain a Windows 2000 test environment that is available to network administrators so they can carry out their own required tests and gain valuable experience with the new operating environment.
