Advantages/Disadvantages of Joining the Campus Windows 2000 Domain

The University of Colorado at Boulder has participated in a Microsoft Rapid Deployment Program with Windows 2000 for the past year and a half. As part of this program, Information Technology Services has taken a lead role in providing a central Windows 2000 infrastructure to the campus. We are working hard to provide the campus with a service that will benefit campus IT administrators as well as campus computer users. Below is a list of some of the benefits departments can derive from the campus Windows 2000 infrastructure.

Advantages
  • ITS will maintain domain controllers for the campus domain. ITS will handle all aspects of these high-availability servers including physical security, network security, data backup, power redundancy, and 24 hour monitoring. This will eliminate the need for departments to purchase and maintain Windows 2000 domain controllers.
  • ITS will handle account management of the domain. Accounts will be automatically created and deleted when users enter and leave UCB as students, faculty, or staff.
  • ITS will handle interoperability with the existing Kerberos environment (IdentiKey) on campus, allowing administrators additional security options in their environment.
  • ITS will handle the DNS requirements of maintaining a Windows 2000 domain.
  • Department administrators will not have to handle password changes for users who forget their passwords. All password management will be handled by users through the standard ITS methods.
  • ITS will maintain a test environment mimicking the campus domain to allow departments to perform testing before joining the campus domain.
  • Departments joining the campus infrastructure will have the assistance of ITS core experts in planning their transition.
  • Sharing information or resources between departments will be simple with a common pool of users.
Disadvantages
  • Departments will not have the ability to modify the Windows 2000 schema for the campus forest. Schema modifications are permanent and affect all participants in the campus forest. ITS will update the schema under certain circumstances (updates to the operating system or critical applications) after testing and review.
  • Departments will not have the ability to create users. ITS will create and delete users as they come and go from the university, and ITS will create and delete departmental administrative users as requested by the departments. Access for people not affiliated with UCB will have to be handled with local server accounts.
