  ITS Help Documentation

ESRI software includes the ArcGIS/ArcInfo package, and ArcView (a subset of the ArcGIS package). ArcGIS is used not only for viewing maps but for transforming, analyzing, manipulating and modeling geographic data. Sometime ArcView is sufficient for a user's needs but it cannot clean digitized data or use topology, very important functions of ArcGIS.

Eligibility:
ESRI licenses (via our site license) are available to faculty and staff at CU-Boulder, on university-owned computers and (for use in education and research only) on personal computers.

Platforms:
ArcGIS is available for Windows and UNIX computers, but not Macintosh. ArcView is for Windows only.

2009-2010 fee schedule:
The fee for an ArcGIS license (expiring Aug.2010) is $95, whether upgrading to ArcGIS 9.3 or simply renewing your existing version.

A license for ArcView is $90, and does not expire.

How to get it:
Send the following information to sitelic@colorado.edu:

  • SpeedType (8-digit departmental account code) to which license fee can be charged; or, personal check (incl. sales tax)
  • The model, OS version, hostname, and hostID of the computer.

What is included:
The ArcGIS package includes ArcInfo, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcView, ArcIMS, ArcSDE and extensions.

Also:
Instructors may request free 1-year licenses for students taking GIS-related courses or programs. And for anyone using ArcGIS 9.2 or higher, free online ESRI Virtual Campus courses are available. Send your request for information or course access codes to sitelic@colorado.edu.

GIS users at CU share their expertise and questions via the Geospatial Email Forum.

Support:

  • Send tech support questions to sitelic@colorado.edu, and include the OS version, ESRI product version, details of the problem, commands used, error messages, etc.
