Greek Community Update
Relationship between the University and Greek Organizations
In spring 2005, all Greek organizations were encouraged by the University to sign a registered fraternal organization agreement comprised of minimum expectations as they relate to leadership, service, scholarship, sisterhood/brotherhood, and member safety. The Panhellenic sororities and multicultural Greek organizations chose to sign their agreements and the Interfraternity Council (IFC) fraternities elected not to. Because of this, the Panhellenic sororities and multicultural Greek organizations are officially recognized by the University as independent student groups and are entitled to all services afforded to such groups. In spring 2008, the Panhellenic sororities developed an enhanced set of expectations entitled, The Standards of Excellence. The multicultural Greek organizations continue to adhere to the Registered Fraternal Organization Agreement. The IFC fraternities, while they are not recognized by the University, are still entitled to educational assistance and resources related to such topics as alcohol abuse, violence against women, and prevention of bias motivated acts.
As a way to support the development of a healthy and unified Greek community, the Coalition for a Responsible Community (CRC) was formed during spring 2005 and has acted as a forum for Greek students, the university, faculty, staff, and Boulder community members. The CRC meets once a month to discuss issues pertinent to the Greek community in regards to their interaction with and impact on the University and Boulder community, values-based programming, and member safety.
