John T. Andrews
Professor of Geological Sciences
Fellow, Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research.
Ph.D., 1965, D.Sc., 1978, University of Nottingham, England
Research Interests:
Main research interest is in the Quaternary history of Arctic areas with special interest
in glacial and glacial marine systems. Current work includes a study of piston cores from
the fjords of Baffin Island and East Greenland, the Labrador Sea, and from Hudson Strait,
and from the East Greenland and Iceland shelves. In addition, work is being conducted on
sediments from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The overall objective is to discuss the sediment
fluxes in the terrestrial to deep-sea pathway and how this changes during intervals of
climate change. In cooperation with scientists from Iceland, a study of lake and
near-shore marine sediments and climate proxy indicators is underway. Techniques used in
the glacial marine studies include clay mineralogy, floral and faunal variations, rock
magnetic variations, and studies of the stable isotopic composition of foraminifera.
Research is being carried on in cooperation with researchers at the Atlantic Geoscience
Center (Canada), University of Tromso, Icelandic Marine Institute and the University of
Iceland, and GeoMar (Germany).
He also helps direct the undergraduate Honors program.
