The Master of Arts (M.A.) program in Art History is a two-year program intended to give the student a broad general knowledge of Art History. A student who has achieved a distinguished record in this M.A. program should be well prepared for acceptance into a doctoral program in Art History. This program is intended as well to give those who do not intend to pursue a doctoral degree the background for work in museums and galleries, for teaching, for work in art and slide libraries, and for critically and historically informed writing in the field of Art History.

The program offers studies leading to the M.A. degree in the following areas:Ancient art; Medieval art; Early Modern & Renaissance art; Baroque art; Art of the Americas; Asian Art, Modern art; Contemporary art; Critical Theory/Museology.

Advanced students are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary approaches as well as to enhance their program of study with cognate courses in other departments such as History, Comparative Literature, Anthropology, English Literature, Women's Studies, Ethnic Studies and Classics.

Our faculty offer a rich selection of seminar topics on their current research interests and in response to student demand. Our intimate atmosphere offers exceptional mentoring to graduate students, teaching assistants, and a Visiting Scholars program that brings additional distinguished, innovative art historians and critics to campus to work directly with the students and to present public lectures on their current work.
