Required Computer Purchase Program

In order to better prepare BFA students for their future endeavors, as well as current course work in the art of cinema, the Film Studies Program at CU Boulder is requiring that Film Studies BFA students own an Apple Macintosh computer system which meets the requirements to run Final Cut Studio (FCS) software, a copy of Final Cut Studio and an external Firewire hard drive.

Film Studies Program Required Computer Systems

There are any number of ways to fulfill this requirement.

Specifications of the recommended systems are subject to change without notice as new models become available. Apple provides support of the systems mentioned here. Film Studies assumes no responsibility for technical support of Apple products.

The minimum Apple supported computer system required to run Final Cut Studio currently is:
iMac 17" 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB of RAM.

Example Optimal Computer Systems:

  • iMac 17" 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM
  • MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM

Example External Firewire Drive:

MacBook and Mac mini are acceptable and have shown, through limited testing, that they can run Final Cut Studio, but are not officially supported by Apple to meet the minimum requirements to run Final Cut Studio. (See note below) For this reason, Film Studies Program assumes no responsibility for performance or operational issues with these systems. Students who buy these systems do so at their own risk.

Note from Apple’s website:

Final Cut Studio is not officially supported on systems using the Intel Extreme Graphics 950 GMA graphics card.

If you have a MacBook or Mac mini, the Final Cut Studio (Universal) crossgrade Installer does not prohibit you from installing the pro applications, but this configuration does not meet the minimum system requirements for Final Cut Studio. The integrated graphics processor in the MacBook does not permit float processing in Motion and will result in degraded performance and other issues in Motion and other Final Cut Studio applications.
See the Final Cut Studio system requirements for complete requirements. (Listed next page)
