Program Description
Before Cinema was made conventional through years of practice, it was a novelty. From its inception Cinema was an experiment. It incorporated aspects of the other arts--theater, visual arts, performing arts and literature, and attracted to its production poets, painters, and performers alike. The fascination with movement and the "reproduction" of aspects of the world launched a variety of projects which gave way to considerations regarding the nature of the "moving image" as an art form. In the hands of artists these investigations, or at times playful experiments, propose ways of shifting our perception of Cinema from an increasingly codified and professionally commercial enterprise to one that that is more personal and lyrical. Courses in the "experimental" moving image making, therefore, explore the re-making and reinventing of the moving image in reflective and thoughtful ways.
