Undergraduate Credit Hour

September 16, 2004

Dear Colleagues -

The Boulder Faculty Assembly would like your responses to the following questions:

1. Should we have a quantitative description of a "credit hour"  for undergraduate courses, that is, should we specify the amount of work expected per credit hour that includes out of class time expectations? (For example, if the expectation is two hours of studying and/or homework per hour spent in the classroom, then the expectation for a three credit course would be three hours of lecture and six hours of additional out-of-class work per week).

2. Should courses with a laboratory, studio, etc., have different expectations for homework per hour of classroom time?

3. Should the definition of a credit hour be:

    A.  Uniform across the campus?

    B.  Set by the individual colleges and schools?

    C.  Set by individual departments?

4.  What are the benefits to students and faculty of having an explicit statement of expected student effort per credit hour?  What are the drawbacks of having such an explicit statement?

To answer, please type your responses in the boxes below and then click the "submit" button at the bottom of the survey. If you do not have access to software that will allow you to complete the form on-line, you may participate by sending e-mail to qotm@spot.colorado.edu.
