Executive Committee Meeting

Monday, November 15, 2004

Guests: Dr. Charles Scoggin

Dr. Elizabeth Dunn, Boulder County Board of Health

Paul Tabolt, Vice Chancellor for Administration

The meeting called for a general discussion about student alcohol use on campus and the approach faculty may wish to take on the issue. Dr. Charles Scoggin, a former member of the faculty at the Health Sciences Center, now on the Boulder campus, is a physician who recommends accountability and higher visibility to send a message of “engagement and encouragement” to students as ways to combat alcohol abuse on campus.  Dr. Elizabeth Dunn, who is faculty and a member of the Boulder County Board of Health, offered a public health perspective and recommended that we stop brainstorming about the problem of alcohol abuse, a serious health issue, and suggested we need a long-term (10 year) approach to the problem based on data obtained by understanding the role alcohol use and abuse play in the lives of students.  Paul Tabolt, Vice Chancellor for Administration,  spoke on the corporate sponsorship agreement with Coors Brewing Company which began in 1999 and is due to expire June 30, 2005.  The long-term relationship with the Coors and family is important to the institution, but the question remains: do we renew, terminate, or review the agreement?  Coors wishes to continue the relationship with CU but a restructuring of the current agreement seems necessary.

The Chair stated that the goal for this meeting was to begin a discussion on students and alcohol use and that it would continue on December 13.
