BFA Election Spring, 2012
Faculty nominees are needed to run for a variety of positions. There are four types of opportunities for faculty to get involved: 1. Represent the faculty at-large by running for election to an At-Large position on the BFA. 2. Represent your department colleagues by running for election to a BFA position reserved for your department. 3. Participate on a BFA Committee. 4. Represent your campus colleagues on Faculty Council or its committees. HOW TO NOMINATE YOURSELF OR YOUR COLLEAGUES There are two ways to make a nomination: (1) Simply compose an e-mail including the name and department of both you and your candidate, and send it to the Nominations and Elections Committee at BFA@Colorado.edu, OR (2) download and complete a printable nomination form and return it to the BFA Office at Campus Box 046 UCB, Boulder, Colorado, 80309. Click here to download a blank nomination form. Please do NOT nominate anyone who has not expressly agreed to the nomination, or who cannot attend monthly BFA meetings. All nominations received before February 17th will appear on the ballot. After that time, new candidates may be elected only by a write-in campaign. Please note - the BFA's rules require that no more than two members of any department, division, or program may serve at any one time as voting members of the BFA. The BFA's Nominations and Elections Committee will contact those nominees who could be affected. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact: WHAT IS THE BFA? WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO. The Boulder Faculty Assembly is the official representative body for faculty governance at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The BFA initiates, advises, and recommends action to the Chancellor and administrative officials on matters related to educational policy and planning and the operations of the Boulder campus. The BFA is the voice of the Boulder faculty, providing an opportunity for faculty to participate in campus-wide shared governance activities. The BFA is composed of 60 elected faculty representatatives. The BFA's representatives are nominated and elected by the Faculty Senate members of the academic unit they represent, and by Faculty Senate members at-large. Click here to look up your unit’s current representative(s). The BFA’s several committees involve up to 100 additional faculty members. Those eligible to nominate, vote for, and/or serve as members of the Boulder Faculty
Assembly and its committees include the following faculty with appointments of at least 50%:
Professors of any rank except adjunct or ‘of practice,’ Instructors of any rank, Research
Professors of any rank, Clinical Professors of any rank, and ROTC faculty of any rank. The BFA advises and collaborates with the Chancellor, Provost, and other key administrators and staff, and with the CU system-level faculty governance group Faculty Council, to develop policy. The BFA can also initiate policy recommendations on its own. For example, this year the BFA provided important input into CU’s revision of its “Dismissal for Cause” policy, and through its Faculty Affairs Committee is working to ease faculty collaboration between departments by developing programs for internal visiting faculty and interdisciplinary faculty seminars. This year the BFA also provided continuous input to campus administration on subjects as varied as weapons on campus, the Honor Code, administrative grade changes, information technology, civility in the classroom, academic space planning, and parking issues. Challenges and issues requiring faculty input now and in the near future include budgetary issues, maintaining competitive salary and benefits, strategic planning, effective advocacy for CU across the State of Colorado, academic accountability standards, and strategic communications. Successful collaborative projects of the BFA in recent years include: Ballotting will occur at the end of February and the first half of March. This year the BFA will use an on-line balloting system, Qualtrics. Each voter will receive an e-mail inviting him or her to vote in the election. The BFA will also send an announcement via E-Memo to remind voters to watch for the e-mail invitation, and a reminder of the deadline. All Boulder campus faculty who are members of the Faculty Senate are eligible to vote in this election, and will receive the e-mail invitation to vote. The Faculty Senate includes all of following with appointments of at least 50% on the Boulder Campus: Professors of any rank except adjunct or ‘of practice,’ Instructors of any rank, Research Professors of any rank, Clinical Professors of any rank, and ROTC faculty of any rank. If you do not receive your invitation to vote after the BFA's Ememo announcement, please check your official "@colorado.edu" email account. The BFA will send email invitations only to your official University of Colorado e-mail account. Election results will be announced to the campus via e-memo. Newly elected BFA members:
