OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED
Faculty nominees are needed to serve in a variety of positions. There are generally four types of opportunities for faculty to get involved:
1. Represent the faculty at-large by running for election to an At-Large position on the BFA.
Each year the Boulder Faculty Assembly seeks faculty nominations for representatives from the ranks of CU-Boulder’s faculty. These positions are for a three-year term. Members are expected to attend monthly BFA meetings in the regular school year (4:00 to 5:30 p.m., generally on the first Thursday of each month).
2. Represent your department colleagues by running for election to a BFA position reserved for your department.
Each year the Boulder Faculty Assembly seeks faculty representatives from the several departments and academic units at CU-Boulder. These positions are for a three-year term. Members are expected to attend monthly BFA meetings in the regular school year (4:00 to 5:30 p.m., generally on the first Thursday of each month). Interested faculty are encouraged to ask their department heads about filling these positions, and to contact the BFA's Nominations and Elections Committee.
3. Participate on a BFA Committee.
The BFA is often seeking faculty from across campus to fill positions on the BFA's committees. Committee members need not be BFA members. These positions are for a three-year term. Meetings are scheduled flexibly depending on members’ availability. Click here for a list of BFA Committees. Many committees have existing or upcoming vacancies that can be filled during the year. Interested faculty should contact the BFA Office.
4. Represent your campus colleagues on Faculty Council or its committees.
Each year the BFA seeks Boulder Campus faculty representatives to serve on the system-wide Faculty Council and its committees. The CU Faculty Council is the representative organization for faculty from from all four of CU's campuses. Faculty Council interacts with the President and Vice Presidents of CU on matters that are of concern to all four campuses. Faculty Council meetings are held monthly during the regular school year on Thursday afternoons, in Denver. Reimbursement for mileage is available. Interested faculty should please contact the BFA Office at BFA@Colorado.edu, or the BFA Chair at Jerry.Peterson@Colorado.edu.
WHAT IS THE BFA? WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO.
The Boulder Faculty Assembly is the official representative body for faculty governance at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The BFA initiates, advises, and recommends action to the Chancellor and
administrative officials on matters related to educational policy and planning and the
operations of the Boulder campus. The BFA is the voice of the Boulder faculty,
providing an opportunity for faculty to participate in campus-wide shared governance
activities.
The BFA is composed of 60 elected faculty representatatives. The BFA's representatives are nominated and elected by the Faculty Senate members of the academic unit they represent, and by Faculty Senate members at-large. Click here to look up your unit’s current representative(s). The BFA’s several committees involve up to 100 additional faculty members.
Those eligible to nominate, vote for, and/or serve as members of the Boulder Faculty
Assembly and its committees include the following faculty with appointments of at least 50%:
Professors of any rank except adjunct or ‘of practice,’ Instructors of any rank, Research
Professors of any rank, Clinical Professors of any rank, and ROTC faculty of any rank.
The BFA advises and collaborates with the Chancellor, Provost, and other key administrators and staff, and with the CU system-level faculty governance group Faculty Council, to develop policy. The BFA can also initiate policy recommendations on its own. For example, this year the BFA provided important input into CU’s revision of its “Dismissal for Cause” policy, and through its Faculty Affairs Committee is working to ease faculty collaboration between departments by developing programs for internal visiting faculty and interdisciplinary faculty seminars. This year the BFA also provided continuous input to campus administration on subjects as varied as weapons on campus, the Honor Code, administrative grade changes, information technology, civility in the classroom, academic space planning, and parking issues.
Challenges and issues requiring faculty input now and in the near future include budgetary issues, maintaining competitive salary and benefits, strategic planning, effective advocacy for CU across the State of Colorado, academic accountability standards, and strategic communications.
Successful collaborative projects of the BFA in recent years include:
Provide input into the Regents’ revision of CU’s Guiding Principles (2011);
Revise the FRPA to allow inclusion of diversity-related items (2011);
Work with the Libraries to reduce costs while preserving quality (2010-11);
Create a unified policy on student athletes’ class conflicts (2009-2011);
Create academic reform in Intercollegiate Athletics (2009-2011);
Revise policy to make institutes’ salary options more flexible (2009-2010);
Revise the Academic Affairs Course Overload Policy (2009);
Create and revise model unit-level grievance procedures (2007-2008);
Review and monitor the status of Boulder’s instructors (ongoing);
Monitor existing Faculty/Staff Dependent scholarships (ongoing);
