Shared Governance: Pleas and Provocations
|
ARCHIVE - August, 2001
We Are the University
Uriel Nauenberg, Department of Physics
In the 1950's President Eisenhower, at a gathering of faculty at a prestigious
university, referred to them as employees of the University. A very famous
professor replied: "Why, Mr. President, we are not employees of the University,
we are the University".
We must remember we all are the University -- the faculty, the administration,
the students, and the staff -- and that we have a responsibility constantly
to make it a better place. This requires that we participate in the day
to day policy decisions that affect the campus. Faculty governance is
the best way to contribute to this effort and I hope the faculty recognizes
this and will help in this endeavor. The BFA hopes that you will join
the faculty governance effort. Let the BFA chair know if you wish to contribute.
We have many joint projects that are currently being worked on by both
the administration and the BFA, projects that are coming to fruition and
that will benefit the university: Opening a dialogue with the CCHE and
others in the state government, the student's honor code, a more equitable
distribution of the salary budget, tuition benefits for faculty offspring,
and day care, to name a few. I feel these efforts will allow us to improve
the quality of our university continually.
This journal is a means for the faculty to express their views. We welcome
all views so that we can reach a better consensus and develop better policies.
Please, participate.
