Wahid Omar was born in the Afghan capital of Kabul.  After his first year of college, he left Afghanistan shortly before the Soviet invasion in 1979.  He lived in France as a political refugee until 1987, when he moved to the US, where he received his bachelor's degree at the University of Colorado (with a major in International Affairs) in 1991, and his Master's degree in French literature at Colorado State University in 1994.  Mr. Omar worked in West Africa as an educational advisor, taught as a full time lecturer for the University of Colorado while working on his PhD, and recently worked in Afghanistan for the UNDP.  He has won many awards for his teaching and writing and collects Afghan folklore, which has garnered the attention of the Smithsonian Institute last year.  Mr. Omar participated actively in the training of university professors at the University of Kabul in 2005.  Mr. Omar has worked intensively since 2001 in project development, implementation, and feasibility studies in Afghanistan.  Under his leadership 45 projects were implemented in Afghanistan ranging from school building, community centers building, teacher training, water improvement projects, micro lending, to humanitarian aid and relief efforts.  His PhD is in Oral Tradition and Community Development, which will be completed in 2008.
