Department of French and Italian

Frequently Asked Questions

I have lived in Italy and speak some Italian but I don't know what course to
take. What do you recommend?

Come into the office and take a placement test. We will test your grammar,
reading, writing and conversational skills and then find the right course for
you. Don't try to place yourself. It is important that we test you.

Can any Italian courses for major/minor credit be taken pass/fail?

No. All courses must be taken for a grade and students must earn a C- to move
to the next level.

What is the difference between ITAL 2120 and ITAL 2130? Can I take them at the same time?

2120 is an intermediate grammar and composition course, and 2130 is an
introduction to Italian literature course. They are both required for the
major and minor. Excellent students of Italian can take the courses together
if approved by the Italian advisor.

What Italian courses are offered during the summer?

We offer ITAL 1010 and ITAL 2110.

I am a doctoral student and have a language requirement that I fulfill by
successfully completing a 4th semester language class. Can I take the first
three semesters pass/fail and then take the 4th semester for a grade?

Yes.
