Applying for Aid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will calculate your financial aid eligibility based on a variety of factors, such as your income, taxes paid, and number in household. In addition, to qualify to receive Federal Student Aid, you must meet all criteria on this page as well as; you must have a valid Social Security Number, a GED or high school diploma, and be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student working towards a degree or certificate program at a school that participates in the federal student aid program. When the FAFSA asks for our school code, please enter 001370. It should be completed as soon as possible after it is available (January) for each academic year the student needs financial aid assistance.April 1st is the priority date for maximum funding. After this date, CU-Boulder continues to offer aid as long as funds are available. You may submit the FAFSA to apply for financial aid throughout the academic year however, you must file your FAFSA, and submit all other documents we request, no later than one month before your last day of classes for the academic year you seek funding for. College Opportunity Fund (COF)Undergraduate Colorado resident students are eligible for a stipend from the State of Colorado to help pay their tuition. For a list of frequently asked questions and a link to the application, see our webpage at www.colorado.edu/studentaffairs/cof.html.DependencyA student's dependency status determines whether or not that student's parents need to report their financial information on the FAFSA. A parent refusing to provide support for their child's education is not sufficient for the child to be declared independent. An independent student is one who is at least 24 years old as of January 1, is married, is a graduate or professional student, has a legal dependent other than a spouse, is a veteran of the US Armed Forces, or is an orphan or ward of the court (or were a ward of the court until age 18). All other students are considered dependent. If a financial aid administrator believes that you are not an independent student, they can require you to provide proof of your independent status to qualify, and the decision on your status may not be subject to appeal. Promissory NotesPromissory Notes are required for all loans. For Direct Loans, Stafford and PLUS, you can sign an electronic master promissory note at dlenote.ed.gov or you can request a paper version be mailed to you. For the Perkins Loan, a Master Promissory Note will be mailed to you once you accept the loan. If you are expecting a refund you must sign up for Direct Deposit. More information on refunds can be found on the Bursar's Page.Summer AidThe summer term at CU-Boulder is considered the last term of the year. What that means for you is that if you use all your financial aid eligibility during the academic year (August-May), you will not have any eligibility left for summer (May-August).
