ETHNIC STUDIES GRADUATION 2008

The Department of Ethnic Studies Graduation ceremony will be held on Thursday May 8, 2008.  Invitations to this wonderful event will sent to our Majors in April 2008.  Congratulations we are very proud of you!

 

WELCOME BACK STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF!

The Department of Ethnic Studies would like to welcome all returning and new students, faculty and staff for the Spring 2008 semester!  There have been many exciting accomplishments, changes and additions to the Department over the past year and we are thrilled to see what the new year will bring.  Please take a look at our Chair's Report from Professor Albert Ramirez which discusses the achievements, challenges and goals of the Department from 2006 to 2008.  Again, welcome back and good luck in the coming semester!

 

  NEW FACULTY!

Welcome to the newest member of our faculty, Dr. Seema Sohi from the University of Washington!  Her area of specialty is Asian American history with a concentration on Asian Indian migration to and from the United States. Other fields of study include twentieth-century U.S. history, Asian American literature, and Comparative colonialisms, with an emphasis on questions of nation and nationalism, empire transnational political movements, and comparative Ethnic Studies.  Professor Sohi will be joining us beginning in the Fall 2007 semester, so be sure to look for her on campus soon.  Check out her biography on the Faculty page!  

 

STARTING IN THE SUMMER OF 2008: ETHNIC STUDIES CURRICULUM CHANGES

-Bachelor's Degree Program-

Major Ethnic Studies

In addition to the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, students must complete at least 33

credit hours of ethnic studies requirements: 12 hours of required ethnic studies core classes with a minimum of

Ethnic Studies


21 credit hours in Ethnic Studies electives, 15 hours of which must be upper division for a total of 24 upper division credits in the major (required courses mentioned below are included).  The 21 credit hours in ethnic studies can be selected from the current ethnic studies course offerings; they may include courses that are cross-listed with DES, as listed in the catalog.

ETHN 2001- Foundations of Ethnic Studies - 3 credits

ETHN 3501-Research Methods in Ethnic Studies-3 credits

ETHN 4511-Research Practicum-3 credits

ETHN 4951 Senior Seminar in Ethnic Studies-3 credits

Elective course work (21 credits)

Minor Ethnic Studies

Students who minor in ethnic studies are expected to complete ETHN-2001 (Foundations in Ethnic Studies), and 15

hours in other DES courses, which may include courses in other departments and/or programs that are cross-listed with DES, as listed in the catalog.
