following questions, which are listed in order from most accessible to
most challenging. You can make up your own question, but be sure you state
that question clearly and explicitly at the beginning of your worksheet,
so that we know what question you're answering. You may want to check the
model "A" worksheets, and the tips for writing and grammar, available on
the course Web page
.
- What is the "unconscious," acording to Freud, and how is it formed?
How is the "unconscious" part of a binary opposition, and how does
language operate to break down or minimize this opposition?
- Discuss Freud's explanation of how a baby turns into a "self," and
how
that "self" forms an "appropriate" adult sexuality. How does Freud's
pathway to adulthood differ for bys and for girls? What are some of the
psychological and social implications of Freud's ideas?
- Discuss the significance of the "mirror stage" in Lacan's ideas about
the development of subjectivity.
- Explain Lacan's idea that "the unconscious is structured like a
language."
