Illustration Five

A diagram of Illustation 5 is shown below. Each respondent received this illustration, measuring 17.5 by 12 inches. Each of the boxes contained a picture of either a statue of Benjamin Franklin (Washington, D.C.) or the capital of a column similar to those of the Supreme Court building. The pictures in the boxes labelled '1' showed the monuments in a condition representing the average current condition of outdoor marble monuments in Washington, D.C. The images in the boxes labelled '2' and '3' were altered to show progressively greater deterioration of these monuments.
