This webpage gives an overview of regulations concerning the disposal and storage of high-level nuclear waste in the USA.
In the introduction, I try to explain the different types of nuclear waste that exist and from which activities they occur. I also explain how radioactive material is currently stored in the United States.
The main part of this page talks about the regulation of high-level waste in the USA. I introduce the Federal Agencies and States involved and show how they interact and what their different responsibilities are. I concentrate on the plans for a permanent repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, and I try to make clear what the regulations for this proposed site are.
I also give a short overview about how the nuclear-waste-problem is handled in Germany.
In the end, I offer some links to interesting sites on the web that deal with the nuclear waste issue and I offer some articles about nuclear waste policies.
I hope this site is a good source for those people who want to inform themselves about nuclear waste and need a good overview of the issue. Feel free to contact me via E-Mail with suggestions how to improve the webpage: henrike.rossbach@colorado.edu.
