The Department of Economics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, recognized as one of the forty best economics departments in the country, is very proud of its accomplishments in the area of graduate education. Graduate students in economics will find that they are participating in a program that trains students well as they prepare for careers in research, teaching, government service or the private sector. Throughout the years, CU-Boulder has maintained a tradition of well-trained graduates, and in recent years we have taken steps to further develop and advance our program. We hope that you will give serious attention to graduate study in economics at the University of Colorado. The program that the Department of Economics offers focus on a solid core curriculum in economic theory and econometrics. Beyond this, we offer a number of applied fields that students may select as areas of concentration. Our most concentrated fields of specialization include international economics, natural resource and environmental economics, and public economics. In addition, students may specialize in urban and regional economics, development economics, labor economics and demography, economic history, and industrial organization. Among the newer tools for economists employed by the department are time series analysis and computable general equilibrium analysis. The faculty in the department pride themselves on their international research reputations. This helps us to be able to expertly direct students in their areas of study and to help in the placement of students after they receive their degrees. In particular, there are frequent opportunities for joint research projects between faculty and graduate students, many of which lead to graduate student publications. The Department of Economics not only stresses high quality research, but also focuses on excellence in teaching, and many of the faculty have won teaching awards. Our typical entering classes average about twenty students. This means that students can expect to have close contact with the faculty. Furthermore, our intent is to provide significant financial support for well-qualified students who are eligible for aid.
