This is the
Resource Page for the ECON 8433,
nominally titled “Topics in Money and International Economics”.

Jim’s lecture slides on modeling dynamics in GAMS/MPSGE for the
Tuesday, April 25, can be found here.
I provided a small table of contents for this file: click on “Bookmarks” tab at
the left side of Acrobat window.

EXPORTING TO EXCEL: The example from Jim’s lecture on April 18th,
referred to pictures 3.5,3.6 in Jim’s text, and respective GAMS program
exported to Excel to produce pictures. Here
is the reproduction of that routine, but modified to use the GDX routines
(available with any GAMS distribution now). Example
uses three ways to put calculated data (parameters) in Excel files (you will
find Excel files ‘PROFI.XLS’, ‘PROFWELF.XLS’, and ‘ALLATONE.XLS’ in your
project directory after the program execution). Also I provide a ready‑made
Excel file that uses the same GAMS output with the pictures (Excel charts)
already made as example.
NOTE: you have to have the Excel installed on your computer for this example to
work.

Jim’s lecture slides for the Tuesday, April 18, can be found here.
Note that he discussed Appendix 4 (comes after appendix 5 in his file). I
provided a small table of contents for this file: click on “Bookmarks” tab at

The data import to and export from the GAMS program is facilitated
these dates with GDX (GAMS Data Exchange) facilities available in GAMS. The
description of the system of commands to read and write to and from Excel file
(GDXXRW) is described on
GAMS site, but the actual use of it may require the creation/use of the
intermediate file in the GDX format first. I will try to get a sense of how to
work with it, and compare it with the older XLLINK facility (used in the
example “Tax policy model in Colombia” presented by Miles and available on our
resource CD). Then I’l report back to you with recommendations.

Note that the official website for this class is
http://www.colorado.edu/Economics/courses/spring06-8433-001.htm
(visible from the Economics
Department website under menu
Courses -> Spring 2006 Courses). That website is
supposed to be the source of the most up-to-date information for the class (at
least in the Jim Markusen’s part).
The teaching page for Jim Markusen is at http://spot.colorado.edu/~markusen/teaching.html.
The home page for Jim Markusen is at http://spot.colorado.edu/~markusen/.
The home page for Keith Maskus is at http://spot.colorado.edu/~maskus/.
Resource CD is provided upon request by Sergey Makarevich
(email: sergey.makarevich@colorado.edu,
or talk to me in class).
University of Colorado – Boulder Library provides subscriptions to the
whole universe of research articles. Arguably the most comprehensive reference
database is EconLit
(this chortcut will work only from the CU computers, otherwise you will need a Remote Access
established).
From the CU computers several full text databases a directly
accessible (by the CU-wide subscription), including, but not limited to JSTOR, where many of the articles for the
Maskus’ part of the course can be found.
Sergey Makarevich, plans to
maintain this small support site.
