Social Complexity:

Pilgrimage is a major force of social integration. The pilgrimage supra-community of shared ideals often achieves high degrees of complexity and stability. Complexity in the form of societal stratification may grow out of a pilgrimage system if leaders acquire ritual suzerainty and establish a segmentary state.
