Ann Nichols Fellowships in Classical Studies
at
The University of Colorado at Boulder
Thanks again to a generous donation from CU Classics alumna Ann Nichols, the Department of Classics will offer a set of scholarships for the coming academic year (2003-2004). One type of scholarship, designated the Distinguished Undergraduate Fellowship, will award about $4,000 to each recipient for study at CU. The second type, the Herodotus Travel Grant, will award about $10,750 to a recipient who demonstrates admission to one of the departmentally approved study abroad programs, the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS, or "Centro") in Rome, or College Year in Athens (CYA). A student may apply for both awards but will be eligible to receive only one. If a student chooses to apply for both, it will be assumed that the travel grant would be preferred. The selection committee normally awards two Distinguished Undergraduate Fellowships and one Herodotus Travel Grant, but the combination can vary from year to year. Should the Herodotus Travel Grant be designated for a recipient who, as it turns out, does not gain admission to the Centro or to CYA, no travel grant will be awarded, and the funds will be used to create additional Distinguished Undergraduate Fellowships.
This form is the application for both fellowships. Some questions will pertain to only one of the fellowships. If you are applying for only one fellowship, please skip the irrelevant questions.Money for the Distinguished Undergraduate Fellowship and the Herodotus Travel Grant will be administered and disbursed through the CU Foundation. Funds may be used to cover tuition and related academic expenses (fees, books, room and board, plus travel for the Herodotus Travel Grant). Both in-state and out-of-state students may apply. To be considered, a student must:
(1) be a current freshman, sophomore or junior in good standing;
(2) be a declared major in Classics;
(3a) for the Distinguished Undergraduate Fellowship, agree to take at least three courses in Classics in the year during which the award is held.
(3b) for the Herodotus Travel Grant, intend to seek admission to the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (Rome) or the College Year in Athens.
