Professor and Acting Chair Christopher Shields congratulates Melissa Baker, Marion Brew and Bleys Keuck (left to right). Thanks to the generosity of an alumna benefactress, the Department was pleased to award fellowships for 1999-2000 to three outstanding undergraduate Classics majors. Bleys Keuck was selected to receive the Herodotus Travel Grant of $11,000 for study abroad, and Melissa Baker and Marion Brew were each selected to recive a Distinguished Undergraduate Fellowship of $4000. Bleys Keuck, a sophomore, plans to use his grant to attend the American Academy for Classical Studies in Rome next year. As the academic year grows to its close, it is a pleasure to take stock in the many accomplishments of the Department this year. I have once again been impressed by the facultyís devotion and direction, both in and out of the classroom. The Department has witnessed substantial growth and transition this year; it remains positioned to continue its impressive ascent into the academic firmament. Among the yearís highlights: After an extraordinary commitment to the Department over three decades, Professor Ernst Fredricksmeyer retires at the end of this year. We trust that he will remain an active member of our community during his retirement. Also entering into retirement is Jane Roberts, our Program Assistant of many years. Those of you associated with the day-to-day operations of the Department will know the invaluable contribution Jane has made to us. We wish her the very best.
We welcomed two new faculty members this year: Profs. Susan Prince and Diane Conlin, both of whom have become active members of the Department. Their contributions are already inestimable.
