Associate of Students of the Classical World Organizes Student Symposium

The Classics department is home base for a lively group of graduate and undergraduate students devoted to study of the ancient world. The Association of Students of the Classical World (ASCW), organized in fall 2000, contains students from Classics, Philosophy and Religious Studies.

The purpose of ASCW is to provide opportunities for students to engage in academic dialogue, professional activities, and teaching and to promote interaction and fellowship among its members. Projects on the academic side include an annual student symposium, complete with presentation and publication workshops, and publication of the papers presented, and outreach to local high schools and new undergraduate majors. Activities include monthly brown bag lunches hosted by members of the Classics faculty, "Cheesy Classics" movie nights, socials, and other fun-filled functions.

Officers of ASCW are Jude A. Morris (president), Rebekah Richards (vice-president), Amanda Coles (secretary), Amy Roberts (Treasurer), Jaime Griffiths, Diversity and Outreach Officer, and Michael Morello (undergraduate representative).

On Saturday, March 17, ASCW hosted its First Annual Student Symposium at which seven students presented papers to an enthusiastic audience including faculty, fellow students and family members. Presenters were Kerry McCutcheon ("Force and Education in the Cave: the Psychology of the Prisoner"), F. Zenon Culverhouse ("The Epistemological Function of Myth"), Jude A. Morris (The Architecture of Initiation: Ritual Orientation in the Procession into the Hellenistic Sanctuary at Samothrace"), Eric Giles ("Ritual and the Sancti Benedicti Regula"), J. Kay Melton (The Proskynesis Controversy: Alexander's Arrogance and Divinity"), Amanda Coles ("Appius Claudius Caecus: Patrician and Politician") and Adam Kay ("Translating Ovid"). Copies of the 2001 ASCW Symposium Journal may be obtained by contacting Jude Morris at J.Morris@colorado.edu.

Jude A. Morris served as symposium organizer and chief editor of the journal containing papers presented at the event. Assistant editors are Rebekah Richards and Amanda Coles. Mary France is the publication assistant and Amy Roberts is in charge of finances. Faculty advisors included Professors Beth Dusinberre, John Gibert, Peter Hunt, Peter Knox, Noel Lenski, Susan Prince, Eckart Schütrumpf and Ariana Traill.
