Ann Nichols Classics Fellowships To Be AwardedOnce again our magnanimous alumna Ann Nichols has offered the department a generous subvention for undergraduate enhancement. The department was able to use $1000 from this gift to attend Tantalus. All majors were offered the opportunity to take advantage of this generous offer and a number of our majors did so. These reported the same enthusiastic response as all of us who attend this remarkable performance. In addition, the department will once again be able to offer four undergraduate fellowships in Classics: one $10,750 award for a current CU student to study abroad and three awards of $4000, two for incoming freshmen Classics majors and one in the same amount for a continuing Classics major already enrolled in the department. If you know any students who may be interested in these awards, please see the application form published on the department web site. The application deadline in February 15, 2001. Last year's recipients included David Darcy, who continues to study Classics and, in particular, archaeology and history, and Sarah Koutavas, who will graduate this spring with a double major in Classics and English. Stephanie Ladd, who received the travel grant for the 2000-2001 academic year, will go to Rome this spring to participate in the program offered by the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. In addition, Aaron Kessler joined us from Regis High on one of the $4000 awards to incoming students. Last year we offered only one award to incoming students but found our applicant pool so outstanding that we decided to expand this part of the scholarship. Aaron is a perfect example of the kinds of students we hope to attract to CU. He is off to a flying start at CU where, among other things, he is enrolled in a 3000 level Latin class and introductory Greek. Yet another star example of outstanding students from Colorado high schools is Ryan Scollard who joined us from Thornton High. Ryan is enrolled in third semester Latin and will soon start beginning Greek. Bravo to our amazing High School Latin teachers throughout the state! |
