8-Page Paper

This paper involves completing the reading for this week and writing an eight page, double spaced paper with normal (minimum 6-in) margins, in Times New Roman 12 point font.

The reading assignment on which the paper will be based is:

LR section 40 (p. 142-49)

Seneca Letter 7 (on e-reserves at Norlin Library: password "romanempire")

Augustine Confessions 6.8(13) (on your reading guide)

After completing the reading, you must then compose your paper on ONE of the following topics:

1) What social function did the games serve in antiquity? How did they fit into the society which spawned them and to what degree were they important to that society? Would the critiques of these spectacles we have just read have resonated with ancient readers or had little effect on their attitude to the games?

2) Did ancient athletic spectacles serve a similar or different function to athletic spectacles in today’s society? Were the ancient spectacles more or less suited to their social context than their modern counterparts? How does your study of ancient athletic spectacle affect your attitudes to modern spectacle (if at all)?

Submitting Your Paper

In order to submit your paper, you must use the anti-plagiarism tool turnitin.com.  You will not receive credit for your paper if you do not submit it through Turnitin.com.

NB: Your name must appear on the upper left hand corner of the first page of your paper. Furthermore, the filename of your paper must be your last name.

How to submit your paper through turnitin.com

If you are a new user (you have never used Turnitin.com before):

1) Go to www.Turnitin.com.

2) Click on the ‘Create Account’ button at the top of page.

3) Under create new account select user type: ‘student’.

4) Enter your class ID: 4501459.

5) Enter your class password: romanempire.

6) Follow prompts on screen, which include entering your email address, choosing a new password, selecting a ‘secret question’ in case you forget the password, etc.

7) Turnitin.com will automatically add you to the CLAS/HIST 4091/5091 master list

8) To submit your paper, click on the name of the course (“Roman Empire”) and then click the “submit” button.

9) Follow prompts on screen in order to upload your paper directly to the website.

10) Turnitin.com will provide you with a digital receipt to confirm successful uploading of your paper. Receipts can also be found by clicking on the “class portfolio” button located in the upper left-hand corner of the page.

11) YOU ONLY NEED TO GO THROUGH STEPS #2 - #7 ONCE. After you’ve added yourself to the CLAS/HIST 4091/5091 master list, you’ll only ever need your email address (…@colorado.edu) as well as the class password (romanempire) in order to log in to your account and submit other papers for this class.

If you are a returning user (you have used Turnitin.com before):

1) Go to www.Turnitin.com.

2) Log in as you usually do, using your email address and password.

3) Click on the button on the left-hand side of the page that says: “enroll in a class”.

4) Add yourself to the CLAS/HIST 4091/5091 master list by entering in the class ID (4501459) and the class password (romanempire).

5) Follow “new user” instructions listed above (starting from #8) in order to upload your paper directly onto the website.
