About the Department
The Classics Department enjoys a reputation for outstanding teaching
and
scholarship. Among our faculty are several winners of prestigious teaching
awards, including the Classical Association of the Middle West and South's
Award for Excellence in College Teaching, the Boulder Faculty Assembly's
Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Chancellor's Faculty Recognition
Award. The department makes a large contribution to the education of
University of Colorado undergraduates both through its major and minor
programs and its popular courses in the College or Arts and Sciences
core
curriculum. Our faculty combine tried-and-true methods with the latest
in
technological innovation. Our graduate programs, offering Ph.D., M.A.,
and
M.A.T. degrees, have attained high standing and attract applicants from
all
over the country.
The accomplishments of our faculty in scholarship are also many and
varied.
They have been recognized by awards and honors ranging from book prizes
to
prestigious extramural fellowships to intramural honors such as the
Boulder
Faculty Assembly's Award for Excellence in Research. Areas of
specialization span Greek and Latin literature and include Greek philosophy,
Greek and Roman history, and Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman art and
archaeology.

The department is housed in the beautiful new Eaton Humanities
Building, which flanks Norlin Library on the campus's main quadrangle.
Eaton is also home to the Departments of French and Italian, Religious
Studies, and East Asian Languages and Cultures. Students enjoy
well-equipped classrooms, comfortable study spaces, and a convenient
non-circulating library of basic texts and reference works. Our community
of students and faculty thrive in the relaxed, outdoorsy atmosphere
of
Colorado's Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Guest lectures and other
special events provide frequent occasions for academic and social
gatherings.
