Chaco Meridian was published in 1999, suggesting that the ancient Southwest had a series of three capitals or political centers (Chaco Canyon 10th-11th century, Aztec Ruins 12th-13th century, and Casas Grandes 14th-15th century). All were on approximately the same north-south meridian. There was good evidence that the three sites were historically related, and in the case of Chaco and Aztec, that alignment was purposeful. Chaco Meridian was controversial. Information from recent excavations suggests that the importance of the north-south meridian pre-dates Chaco Canyon, going back to the 6th century. The new data suggest it is time to revisit Chaco Meridian and see what holds up, and what doesn't.
