Association of Students of the Classical World
Call for Papers

The Association of Students of the Classical World (ASCW) is pleased to
announce a call for graduate and undergraduate papers for its Third Annual ASCW Student Symposium on March 15, 2003.

Graduate and undergraduate students from all departments at the University of Colorado at Boulder are invited to submit papers on any topic related to the ancient Mediterranean world (spanning from pre-history to the late Byzantine and early Ottoman empires, as well as Medieval topics).Students will have the opportunity to present their papers to a group of students, faculty, family, and friends at the Symposium, which will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2003. Selected students will also have the opportunity to have their papers published in a journal of the proceedings, which will be released tentatively on May 1, 2003.

Paper Requirements:

Papers are due no later than November 22, 2002. Their length may be between seven (7) and eight (8) pages; art and archaeology students may also include an additional three (3) pages of visual aids. Papers must be double-spaced. Please submit three (3) copies, each with a cover sheet that provides the papers title, the students name, and his or her point of contact (e-mail and/or phone). Each paper will be reviewed for acceptance by the ASCW Editorial Board. Acceptance for presentation at the Symposium does not guarantee that a paper will be published in the journal. Students accepted to present at the Symposium will be notified by November 25, 2002. Papers may be submitted to Eric Parris, ASCW President, either in person or in his box in the ASCW box in Humanities 332.

Participation Requirements:

All students whose papers are accepted are required to participate in a Symposium presentation workshop to be held during the week of February 17 to 21, 2003. This workshop will be taught by professors from the Classics Department and will concern the oral presentation of a written paper. All presenting students are expected to attend the entire Symposium. Each student whose paper is accepted for publication in the journal will also be expected to participate in one-on-one workshops with the journals editors, dates to be announced, to discuss editing and preparing his or her paper for scholarly publication. Each student will then be paired up with a CU Classics professor to receive further advising on editing for publication.
