The University of Colorado

The main campus of the Univeristy of Colorado is situated in Boulder, a city of 90 000 people 25 miles northwest of Denver. The University’s five colleges and five professional schools offer more than 3000 courses in over 140 fields of study. There are approximately 80 degree programs available at the bachelor’s level, 60 at the master’s level, and 53 at the doctoral level. The Boulder campus comprises 600 acres and has a student body of approximately 26 000, including 4000 graduate students.

Boulder is situated at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 5450 feet, the city enjoys mild winters and sunny, dry summers. With an average of 300 days of sunshine each year and a mountain setting of great natural beauty, Boulder is an ideal setting for the University. As well as the many and diverse cultural activities within Boulder, the nearby Rocky Mountains also offer a diversity of summer and winter ecreational activities including world-class skiing, mountain biking, and hiking.

Boulder has become a scientific center for the Rocky Mountain region. Close cooperation exists between the University and the local laboratories of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR).

University initiatives such as The Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) and the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) are directly involved in the education of chemistry and biochemistry graduate students. A number of chemical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical companies are located in or near Boulder including Ball Brothers Research Corporation, Lockheed Martin, Array-Biopharma, Amgen Development, Roche, Hauser Research Laboratories, NeXstar, Ribozyme Pharmaceuticals, Somalogic, Sievers Research, and Displaytech.
