Wireless Internet Access—Setup Information

Overview

To access the wireless network on campus, you will need to know your CU login name and IdentiKey password. If you need information on obtaining your IdentiKey, click here or call the IT Service Center at (303) 735-HELP (5-4357 from a campus phone).

To connect to the wireless data network, you will need a laptop with an 802.11g (preferred) or 802.11b wireless network card, either built-in or external.

	CU-Boulder's wireless service is called UCB Wireless.
		"UCB Wireless" is CU-Boulder's SSID.

CU-Boulder's wireless network can be identified by the SSID (or Network Name) "UCB Wireless."  ITS recommends that you choose UCB Wireless as your wireless network when you are on campus.

IP Address Range for UCB Wireless
The IP address range for UCB Wireless is 172.21.176.x - 172.21.253.x. This means that anyone who is restricting access to their services by IP address as a means for assuring that they are only accessed from on-campus should allow that address space too since it is only routed locally. When
on-campus wireless clients try to reach off-campus Internet services these private addresses are translated (using Network Address Translation, or NAT) to public IP addresses of 128.138.64.x. Off-campus service providers may need this address range.

Register Your Computer on the Wireless Network

To start using wireless, you need to register your wireless network card. Open a web browser and go to http://dhcp.colorado.edu. You will be re-directed to the registration web page. Read and accept the User Agreement, enter your CU Login Name and IdentiKey password, then restart your computer (power off and on). Make sure you clear your web browser’s cache after registering your computer. This will help you get on the network. Troubleshooting UCB Wireless

If you are having difficulty connecting to UCB Wireless or you are experiencing slowness the following steps may help you:

• Clear your web browser’s cache.
• Know that although UCB Wireless is almost everywhere on campus, there are areas where the signal is not as strong or doesn’t exist. Try moving to another area to see if you can pick up a signal or improve the signal’s strength.
• If your connection is slow no matter where you are, try updating your wireless driver. It is highly recommended that everyone periodically check their wireless card vendor's website for driver updates. Download and install new drivers as instructed.
