Frequently Asked Questions

What does "rewire" mean?

  • The project will upgrade the voice and data wiring in General Fund buildings on campus. Existing jacks in these buildings will be replaced with upgraded category 5e cabling.

How does the rewire affect me?

  • If you are in a General Fund building, the wiring to all networking jacks (where you plug in your phone and data network connections) will be upgraded.

What are the benefits of the rewire?

  • This effort will allow the networking infrastructure to support higher network speeds. The project will also be upgrading data network switches and improve security.

How is this project being funded?

  • The project is being funded by a student capital construction fee passed in 2004.

When will the jacks in my building be rewired?

  • The work will be performed in four phases beginning in November 2006. Please refer to the project timeline to see when your building is scheduled to be rewired.

Will I still have my telephone jack after the rewire?

  • Yes, your jack location will not change, however the jack number will change.

Will the rewire make my network connection faster?

  • Service speeds will be upgraded to 100Mbps after your building is rewired. A scheudle for this upgrade is currently being created.

What do I need to do for rewire?

  • Personal belongings should be moved from desks and tables.
  • In many cases, furniture will need to be moved. Items located on your furniture may be shifted as a result. Please be aware that the contractor will do their best to not disrupt your office and anything you can do to help them is greatly appreciated.

Do I need to move my furniture?

  • The contractor is responsible for moving furniture in you office.
  • If your furniture needs to be dismantled to gain access to the network jacks, you will receive a 48 hour notification of this work. The contractor will dismantle and   reassemble your furniture during the night work.

Will I have to change any settings on my computer?

  • Changes to the computer will not be necessary with the rewiring. Future service enhancements, however, may require some modification to settings.

How will I know when the jacks in my office are going to be rewired?

  • A general notification will be posted on your door listing dates when construction will be occurring in and around your office.
  • A 24 hour notification will be posted on your door one day in advance of construction occurring in your office. If there are several dates listed, entry in your office is required more than once.
