DHCP Registration on the CU Network

Overview

In an effort to improve network security, ITS requires periodic registration of computers using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) on all wireless networks, ResNet networks, and selected wired networks. DHCP allows a device to automatically obtain TCP/IP settings needed to connect to the network. Registration of a computer's network hardware allows CU network managers to notify the computer owner of any network security problems or usage violations. Any devices which use assigned static IP addresses are already registered in the campus DNS database and do not need to be re-registered.

Outline of DHCP Registration Process

1. Open a web browser (Windows computers should use Internet Explorer).

2. If you do not see the Network Registration web page, enter dhcp.colorado.edu in the address bar and you should be redirected.

3. Enter your CU login name and IdentiKey password.

4. You will then see the Use of CU-Boulder's Computing and Network Resources policy, as shown below. Review the entire policy, then click to accept policy.

5. Click Submit.

6. If you have registered properly, you will be prompted to Shut down your computer and Restart.

Until the computer is registered, the only network connection allowed will be to the registration web page. To register, simply open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer) and you will be automatically redirected to a webpage and asked to enter your CU login name and IdentiKey password. After registration, the computer must be shut down and restarted to gain full network access. The person who registers will be contacted if any network abuse or security issues are associated with the device.

Windows Scan: During the registration process, each Windows computer will be scanned for vulnerabilities that could negatively affect the network if exploited. If vulnerabilities are discovered, the registering user will automatically be given any needed operating system updates and patches. This will help keep the network more secure and protect the individual computer from hackers.

Guest Registration

If you are registering a University guest or visitor using your IdentiKey, be aware that you are accepting responsibility for that person's use of the network, and you will be contacted in the event of any network misuse. On the registration web page, there is a separate place to enter the computer owner's name.

Check Your Registered Computers

To view a list of devices you have registered click here (VPN required for off-campus use of this tool). After entering your user name and Identikey password you will be given a list of all hardware addresses you have registered.

UMC DHCP Registration

Once per year, each networked device using DHCP on the wired network in UMC must be registered by a University affiliate with an IdentiKey (combination of CU login name and IdentiKey password).

Devices Not Using DHCP

Any devices which use assigned static IP addresses are already registered in the campus DNS database and do not need to be re-registered. If you have a static IP Address assigned to any of your network printers, servers or workstations, it is recommended that you visit http://hippo.colorado.edu/ipchange/ipchange.cgi to verify and update the DNS records.

Get Help

If you do not know your IdentiKey password or need further assistance, contact the IT Service Center at (303) 735-HELP (5-4357 from a campus phone).
