Local Documents
This document is designed to introduce Boulder Campus users to local Unix
conventions that they may have not seen on Unix systems at other sites.
The directory
-
/usr/its/doc
contains several files that explain ITS procedures, user responsibilities,
and some third-party software documentation. In particular, Accounts,
Disk Allocation, and User Responsibilities should be consulted.
Home Directory Conventions
The path to a user's home directory uses the following convention:
-
/home/username
where username usually corresponds to your last name
or some variation of your last and first name and/or initials. For example,
if my name is John Doe, then my home directory might be
/home/doej
While your physical home directory may be slightly different (i.e.,
/home3/username/), the physical location can change due to disk
space demands. The path to your home directory of /home/username/
is always guaranteed to work.
Login Shell
Every user has /usr/local/etc/CNSlogin as their shell in the password
file. CNSlogin performs several system tasks and then invokes the
shell specified in the .shell file in your home directory,
the korn shell, ksh, by default. If you wish to have another shell
invoked, run the command chsh (change shell). Magtape Procedures
ITS currently has one nine-track, two DAT, and one 3480/3490 magnetic
tape drives on its Unix systems. The drives are connected to dino. Magtapes
can be checked into the Computing Center, 3645 Marine Street. DAT tapes
can be purchased at the Electronic Store in Duane Physics E116. When you
check in a tape, you will be given a VSN number; you will need this VSN
number when you want to have a tape mounted on a tape drive. For more
information on mounting magtapes, type
man tmount
