Silesia Poland-Colorado Trade Mission to Colorado

Tuesday October 20 - Friday October 23, 2009

Location: Oct. 20 Denver; Oct. 21 Colorado Springs; Oct. 22 Boulder; Oct. 23 Open Appointments

In early 2009, CEUCE began a relationship with W. E. Loopesko & Associates (WELA) to act as a host and organizer of WELA's Silesia, Poland-Colorado Trade Mission in Colorado. WELA and CEUCE - with support from the Office of the Mayor of Katowice, the Head Minister of Trade and Investment at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, the Honorary Polish Consul residing in Colorado, the World Trade Association in Denver, the Colorado Springs Office of International Affairs and the Boulder Chamber of Commerce - welcome the Polish Delegation, consisting of 8-10 private sector companies, 3 universities and various Polish federal and municipal government representatives, to Colorado for the Silesian-Colorado Trade Mission from October 19-23, 2009.

The mission brings the two regions together to promote business, intellectual and political exchanges. Both regions have young, dynamic and ambitious populations, and their region's roles and visibility in their respective countries are expected to grow substantially in the next 10 - 20 years. We are confident the two regions, economies and research centers have much to share with each other.

The meetings will be tailored to the delegation's interests and needs. WELA and CEUCE will identify: Colorado counterparts to the Polish delegation;
Colorado companies, institutions and agencies with mutual interests and synergistic opportunities with Silesia; themes based on the unique expertise and experiences of both Colorado and Silesia

Objectives:
WELA and CEUCE will catalyze and facilitate unique and productive business opportunities; develop new research and educational partnerships; and establish economic and political linkages between Silesia and Colorado.

For more information or if you are interested in setting up an appointment with the Polish delegation, please contact Myka Lee at ceuce@colorado.edu.

Spring 2009 Tocqueville Lecture: Dr. Sidney Tarrow

Monday, April 20, 2009, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Location: Old main chapel, University of Colorado

The Tocqueville Initiative and the Center to Advance Research and Teaching in the Social Sciences (CARTSS) presents "Red of Tooth and Claw": How it was war - and not theory - that produced both uncivil and civil politics in France and why it matters to Americans, by Dr. Sidney Tarrow

"Why did the revolution break out in France," Alexis de Tocqueville asked himself? He offered two answers: first, that the Old Regime's centralization had denuded the aristocracy and other corporate groups of their positive functions and, second, that the revolutionaries were influenced by the philosophers' ideas of an impossible organic democracy. That led, so he   argued, to the myth of the general will and to the practice of totalitarian democracy. This paper argues in a Tillian vein that it was the strains of state building and the struggle for power, both internal and external, that drove the revolutionaries towards the terror, and towards something else as well: the invention of the citizen army that was the correlative, at the military level, of mass democracy at the political level.   Why this should matter to Americans is the question with which the lecture closes.
