CAS offers funding for Asia-related speakers, conferences, special events, or other projects; there are three tiers of event support, and applicants must indicate in the application which tier they are applying for. See below for a summary of the funding levels.
Proposals may be submitted by faculty members at CU or faculty members at other institutions in conjunction with CU faculty members. A faculty member is eligible to receive only one CAS event grant per academic year, and CAS will only fund one event per day. If you need information about whether there is a conflicting event on a certain date, please contact CAS. Please also note that there is a monthly limit for each funding level; if we reach the limit before your application is received, we may have to provide a lower-tier award or not provide funding at all.
Cost sharing with other units, committees, or programs is encouraged and will strengthen a proposal.
Proposals for larger events requiring greater funding or requests that do not fall within the three categories should be discussed with the Director of CAS before a formal request is submitted.
Please note that if the speaker is not a US Citizen or Permanent Resident of the US, paying an honorarium can be very complex, partly due to complications after September 11th. The procedure varies depending on the speaker’s visa status, but a large amount of information will need to be gathered before the event in order to pay an honorarium. In many cases, it may be easier to pay travel expenses in lieu of an honorarium when inviting an international scholar to present. Please contact CAS if you have questions about inviting an international scholar.
Due to limits on our spending set by our funding agencies, CAS is unable to pay for food (except for Tier 1 events) or alcohol, except in rare cases. We can usually pay for travel expenses, but international airfare requires 30-day preapproval and travelers will be required to comply with the Fly America Act (and use American carriers for the international legs of their travel). We can pay for publicity and printing costs. Please keep these restrictions in mind when preparing your application and contact us if you have any questions.
