June 10-12, 2009 -- Socratic Seminar Leader Training with a Focus on Primary Sources from East Asia

The Program for Teaching East Asia, University of Colorado is offering a 30-hour Socratic Seminar Leadership Course, June 2009.  The course is open to teachers who have either (1) completed an NCTA 30-hour seminar on East Asia offered at any Colorado location; (2) participated in TEA workshops on East Asia conducted between 2007 and 2009; or (3) participated in a TEA summer institute. The course is taught by nationally recognized Socratic Seminar trainer John Zola. Participants in the program will develop skills as Socratic Seminar discussion leaders. Unique to the program is a focus on using primary sources from Chinese and Japanese traditions in history, art, literature, history, and film as Socratic Seminar discussion texts in the classroom. The course is designed to provide NCTA and TEA program alumni who have completed significant study of East Asia with continued study combined with pedagogical training on Socratic seminars. This 30-hour training will be held as a commuter course. The Socratic Seminar training offers teachers the opportunity to:
• Learn how to conduct Socratic Seminars.
• Engage in challenging discussions with colleagues.
• Enrich your knowledge of East Asia.
• Develop a resource library of Socratic Seminar “texts” for classroom use.
• Receive grad credit in Education or recertification hours.

Enrollment is limited to 24 teachers; class must have a registration of 15 teachers to be offered. Full attendance is required. Class participants receive a Socratic Seminar training manual and a resource notebook appropriate for use in secondary social studies and literature classes. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.

National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) 2009 Residential/Online Seminar

NCTA at CU-Boulder is pleased to announce an NCTA Seminar on East Asia for Colorado and Wyoming teachers. This seminar will be offered partially online and partially in a residential setting during summer 2009 and is the first offering by NCTA of this kind. Our goal is to provide the NCTA experience to teachers who are not able to commute to our school-year seminars. This seminar is open to secondary world geography, world history, and world literature teachers who are teaching courses that include the study of China and/or Japan during the 2009-10 school year. This 40-hour seminar offers secondary teachers the opportunity to engage in study, analysis, and discussion of new scholarship related to Chinese and Japanese history, geography, and culture.  Seminar Delivery, Location, and Dates:  Teachers will participate in the seminar through three components:
• Approximately five hours of online instruction and discussion in May-June 2009;
• 25 classroom hours through a subsidized residential seminar at CU-Boulder, June 30-July 3, 2009;
• Approximately 10 hours of online instruction and discussion in early fall 2009.

This seminar must have a minimum of 15 people to run. Registration deadline is April 30. REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
