Summer Study Tours to China and Japan

Teachers who have taken part in an NCTA seminar sponsored by TEA are eligible to apply to NCTA study tours. The application process for the 2010 study tour will be announced in December 2009. Eligible teachers are those who participated in an NCTA seminar between 1999-2009 in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the NCTA seminars associated with Loyola Marymount University, University of the Pacific, and California State University-Fullerton in California.

Summer 2009

Teachers who have successfully completed an NCTA seminar sponsored through the University of Colorado NCTA National Coordinating Site or its California and Iowa Partner Sites were invited to apply for the NCTA 2009 Study Tour to China. The summer 2009 study tour theme was "Inventing and Reinventing China: the PRC at 60", which teacher participants explored while visiting Beijing, Xi'an, Guizhou, Lijiang, and Shanghai. The study tour included visits to schools, museums, famous sites and lesser-known locations that helped teachers learn about the various uses of history and tradition in contemporary China.

Through the 21-day study tour and the school-year follow-up program, participating educators are prepared and supported to strengthen Asian studies content in appropriate school curricula. Participants will meet once for a follow-up workshop in fall 2009. They will also participate in a year-long follow-up program, which includes disseminating their new knowledge to fellow teachers and implementing new lessons and resources in their classrooms.
