Summer Study Tours and Institutes

Teachers who have taken part in an NCTA seminar sponsored by TEA or other NCTA partner sites are eligible to apply to NCTA study tours and summer institutes.

 

For Summer 2013, NCTA plans two national study tours to Japan.

The Five College Center for East Asian Studies is accepting applications for a national NCTA Exploring Peace Studies in Japan Study Tour. Any educator who has completed a 30-hour NCTA seminar is welcome to apply. Tentative dates are June 20-July 2, 2013, the cost is $500, and the application deadline is February 15, 2013. The study tour information and application form may be downloaded from the FCCEAS website. Funding for this study tour is pending at this time; please see the application form for more information on how this impacts the application process.

The University of Colorado Program for Teaching East Asia will conduct a four-week study program in Japan, jointly funded by NCTA and the U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Groups Projects Abroad.  Prerequisite for this study program is successful completion of TEA’s Cultural Encounters course.  This program has filled.

 

NCTA Summer Institutes

2013 Summer Institutes

The following residential programs are offered as enrichment programs for NCTA alumni nationwide and are also open to teachers who have not previously taken NCTA programs.

Residential Summer Institute: "Re-Inventing Japan: Teaching about 21st-Century Issues and Challenges, July 9-13, 2013. NCTA at the Program for Teaching East Asia, University of Colorado.

This eight-day program offers resources and materials to help teachers address current issues in Japan in the classroom. The institute will consider social trends and challenges, political reform, global Japan, lessons of Japan’s March 2011 triple tragedy, and new directions in culture, literature, and the arts.

Residential Workshop: "Teaching East Asian Literature in the High School Workshop," July 14-19, 2013. NCTA at Indiana University.

This workshop is designed for high school English and world literature teachers who are interested in incorporating Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature into their curriculum. Following the workshop, each participant develops a complete lesson plan for at least one of the pieces covered in the workshop. Application information.
