NCTA Seminars and Offerings for the 2011-12 School Year
NCTA entered its 14th year during the 2011-12 academic year. This year, the NCTA National Coordinating Site at the University of Colorado is sponsoring 30-hour seminars, mini-seminars, and short courses in East Asian history and culture for secondary teachers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Programming will be offered in traditional classroom settings and through online offerings. Click on Seminar Sites and Applications above for details for each state. Seminar applications are posted as they become available.

- Eligibility to apply to NCTA study tours to East Asia and NCTA summer institutes.
Eligibility
Highest priority is given to secondary teachers of world geography, world history, world cultures, art history, religion, economics, and language arts/literature. Other K-12 educators in a position to promote the sustained presence of Asia in the curriculum, such as media specialists and curriculum coordinators, are considered in accordance with the specific course and space availability.

Join an NCTA 30-hour professional seminar in your area, offered by the NCTA National Coordinating Site at the Program for Teaching East Asia and its local and state coordinators.
For 2011-2012, the NCTA National Coordinating Site at the Program for Teaching East Asia continues to offer innovative formats for NCTA professional development courses, as well as classic NCTA 30-hour seminars, with the generous support of the Freeman Foundation. NCTA Blended Seminar: South Denver and Western Slope/Grand Junction
NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION
The NCTA National Coordinating Site at the Program for Teaching East Asia is offering a "blended" seminar beginning in September 2011 and running through early January 2012. The seminar is open to teachers in the South Suburban Denver area and the Colorado Western Slope. Participants will complete approximately half of the seminar in four face-to-face Saturday meetings and the other half of the seminar online with video lectures and an interactive online discussion forum.

NCTA at the Iowa Council for the Social Studies (October 2011).
NCTA is sponsoring a strand of sessions on East Asia as part of NCTA co-sponsorship of the Iowa Council for the Social Studies Fall Conference, October 17-18, 2011 in Des Moines. Teachers registering for the conference may attend up to four sessions focusing on resources and strategies for teaching about East Asia presented by NCTA teacher alumni from Iowa. NCTA Three Days of East Asia Workshops (September-November 2011).
Nebraska social studies teachers have a unique opportunity to gain resources and curriculum for teaching about China and Japan through three workshops offered by NCTA in Fall 2011. Teachers may register for a one-day workshop on Japan, a one-day program on China, and attend a strand of sessions on East Asia sponsored by NCTA at the Nebraska Council for the Social Studies annual conference. NCTA Blended Seminar: Salt Lake City Area
The NCTA National Coordinating Site at the Program for Teaching East Asia is offering a "blended" seminar beginning in September 2011 and running through early January 2012. The seminar is open to teachers in the greater Salt Lake City area. Participants will complete approximately half of the seminar in five face-to-face Saturday meetings and the other half of the seminar online with video lectures and an interactive online discussion.

A 25-hour online seminar on "Modern China and Japan, 1800 to the Present" is planned for Winter-Spring 2012. A 25-hour online seminar on "Modern China and Japan, 1800 to the Present" is planned for Winter-Spring 2012. The seminar will be open to secondary social studies and world literature teachers who live outside the Denver-Boulder metro area and who, because of distance, would not able to participate in NCTA's traditional classroom seminars offered along the Front Range.
